Invisalign ®

If you think that the only way to correct crowding, spacing or alignment is through years of wearing metal braces, you obviously have not heard about Invisalign. Invisalign technology is definitely 21st-century technology, first debuting in 2002. Although they have always been very popular with teenagers, an increasing number of adults are choosing Invisalign as well.

Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible when you smile or talk. They are also much more comfortable than metal braces. You can remove Invisalign aligners to eat or take care of your dental hygiene, so you are freed from the cleaning issues that wearers of metal braces often face.

Invisalign aligners typically work best on patients who need minor or moderate corrections. They may not be as effective for patients with teeth that have rotated in the socket or whose teeth are extremely out of position. This does not mean that Invisalign cannot be used in these situations; there are attachments that can sometimes be used, but these normally detract from the aligners’ aesthetic invisibility.

The process begins with an examination, a bite registration, x-rays and photographs. An impression of the patient’s gums and teeth will be made at this time also. These impressions are then scanned into a computer to create a 3D model of the patient’s mouth. A program then determines the treatment that will be needed to correct the patient’s issues. After reviewing the computer images, your dentist will then order the correct aligners.

Although we may advise a different schedule, most Invisalign aligners are worn for 22 hours each day for the first 14 days. Length of treatment depends on the complexity of the issues being addressed, but the average is between 12 and 15 months. After treatment is concluded, we may recommend that you wear a retainer overnight for an indeterminate period.

Reston Invisalign Services

If you think that the only way to correct teeth crowding, spacing issues, or misalignment is through years of wearing metal braces, you probably have not heard about Invisalign. Invisalign technology is a 21st-century technology, first debuting in 2002. Although they have always been very popular with teenagers, an increasing number of adult patients are choosing Invisalign as well.

Reston Serenity Smiles offers Invisalign in Reston, VA as one of the primary services to our patients.

What Is Invisalign?

Unlike conventional braces, Invisalign involves wearing a series of aligners created with a strong, lightweight, and clear plastic material. These almost invisible aligners are designed to fit snugly over your upper and lower teeth, gradually guiding them to a better position over time. Invisalign treatment is an excellent option for adults and teens with crowded teeth, gap teeth, and other common teeth and jaw issues.

Because they’re almost undetectable and fully removable, Invisalign won’t interfere with your daily oral hygiene routine or lifestyle. They are also comfortable to wear without metal, like those of traditional braces that can cause mouth abrasions during treatment.

Note that Invisalign aligners typically work best on patients who need minor or moderate corrections. They may not be as effective for patients with teeth that have rotated in the socket or whose teeth are extremely out of position. However, this does not mean that Invisalign cannot be used in these situations. Some attachments can sometimes be used, but these normally detract from the aligners’ aesthetic invisibility.

What Orthodontic Issues Can Invisalign Help Address

  • Crowded Teeth. When there isn’t enough space for your teeth to fit normally in the mouth.
  • Gaps Between Teeth. Those prominent gaps between your teeth disrupt that smooth, straight smile.
  • Misaligned Teeth. An uneven lineup that has your teeth looking off-course.
  • Overbite. An overbite is when the upper teeth bite over the lower teeth, often caused by genetics, bad oral habits, or overdevelopment of the bone that supports the teeth.
  • Underbite. An underbite is when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth, usually caused by undergrowth of the upper jaw, overgrowth of the lower jaw, or both.
  • Crossbite. This occurs when the upper and lower jaws are both misaligned, leading to one or more upper teeth biting on the inside of the lower teeth.
  • Open Bite. This is when some teeth cannot make physical contact with the opposing teeth for a proper bite.

What Is Our Process for Invisalign Treatment

Step 1: Consultation

Our dentist in Reston, VA will assess your oral health during the initial consultation. They will create a personalized treatment plan that suits your needs. Planning is essential in orthodontic care as each individual has unique needs.

Step 2: Creating Imprints

We begin by taking digital imprints of your teeth. These impressions are then scanned into a computer to create a 3D model of your mouth. A program determines the treatment required to correct your orthodontic issues. After reviewing the computer images, our dentist will order the correct aligners.

Step 3: Wearing Aligners

You will wear each set of removable aligners for approximately two weeks. It’s important to wear them for at least 20-22 hours a day for optimal results. You can remove the aligners when eating or cleaning your teeth, but they should be worn at all other times.

Step 4: Follow-Ups

After receiving your first set of aligners, we will schedule follow-up appointments to ensure that the treatment plan is progressing as expected. These appointments also allow us to make any necessary adjustments and address any concerns you may have.

Step 5: Switching to New Aligners

Once your teeth have shifted to their desired position, you will move on to the next set of aligners in your treatment plan. Each set of aligners is designed to shift your teeth into the correct position gradually.

Step 6: Maintaining Results

After completing your Invisalign treatment, our dentist may recommend wearing a retainer to maintain the results. This is an essential step in keeping your teeth aligned and preventing them from shifting back to their original positions.
